Assumptions behind the loads
- Autopilot: Type 1 linear drive averaged over its duty cycle on a balanced boat. Doubles on a badly-trimmed one, which is the cheapest efficiency gain available.
- Refrigeration: Compressor duty cycle in the tropics, where a box built for the Bay runs far harder than its rating suggests.
- Starlink Mini: Post-2026-firmware planning average. Idle is 15–16W, typical 17W, and startup peaks near 60W — size the fuse for the peak, the bank for this.
- Laptop, phone, tablet: Includes inverter conversion loss.
- Watermaker (Rainman 12V DC): 400W draws about 33A, which is a large but brief load. An hour makes roughly 30 litres. Run it while the engine is charging and it is nearly free.
- Solar yield: 3.4 Wh per watt of panel per day, not the 4–6 peak sun hours a land installer quotes. A boat shades its own panels with the boom and rig, panels run hot and lose output, and the array is rarely pointed anywhere useful.

Forespar Line Control telescoping whisker pole (13-24ft, rated to 46ft boats) pl | $2,200 $0all boats$4k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price estimated | ESTIMATE, and a real gap. The Milk Run is a downwind passage and an unpoled genoa collapses and refills in the swell for three weeks — that destroys the sail, shock-loads the rig and makes the boat unliveable. A pole is what turns a rolly reach into a stable run. Line control means you set and douse it from the mast rather than the end of the pole. ESTIMATE — Defender shows 'see price in cart' for this pole and lists it out of stock. Poles in this size typically run $1,500-2,000; mast track, car, topping lift and foreguy add $500-700. ATN Mastclimber bosun chair with ascenders, leg straps and tool bag | $575 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | Missing from the original list. You will go up the mast on this trip — a chafed halyard, a failed masthead light, a fouled wind transducer — and with a crew of two there is nobody to winch you. The Mastclimber lets one person self-ascend using leg power and stay close to the mast when the boat rolls, which is the difference between a job and an accident. In stock, ships same day. Works over an existing halyard, no extra rigging needed. 2 alternatives considered

Rigged boom preventers both sides: low-stretch line, bow-lead snatch blocks, boo | $450 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P1 | Bay Area rigger, or DIY from Defender / Fisheries Supply price estimated | ESTIMATE, and the single most important thing missing from the original list. A proper preventer runs from the boom END forward to a bow block and back to the cockpit so it can be set and released without anyone going on deck. A vang-to-toerail strop is not a preventer; it bends booms. 2 alternatives considered

Rough split: 200ft of high-modulus double braid for a spare halyard ~$400, spare genoa and main sheets ~$250, leather, chafe tape and rollers ~$100, spare blocks, snatch blocks and shackles ~$150. ATN Gale Sail storm jib, 100 sq ft (36-43ft boats), hoists over a furled headsai | $1,801 $0all boats$4k | 100% certain | P2 | ATN Inc (direct) price verified | RECOMMENDED by WCC 2026 and the natural companion to the series drogue you have already budgeted — a drogue without storm canvas is half a heavy-weather plan. The Gale Sail is the one that matters for a boat with roller furling: it hoists over the furled genoa so nobody unrolls a headsail on the foredeck in 45 knots, and it needs no removable inner forestay. $1,800.75 including free US shipping (international is a flat $150). This covers the storm jib only. For the mainsail half, WCC accepts either a trysail (~$1,200-2,000 from a sailmaker) or a third reef cutting the luff by 50% — the deep third reef is cheaper, easier to set, and what most cruisers actually use. 2 alternatives considered

Battery monitor, busbars and Class-T fusing | $712 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P1 | NAZ Solar Electric / Current Connected price from a listing | Shunt-based monitor with Bluetooth, Lynx-style busbars, and Class-T fuses on the bank. Class-T is a lithium-specific requirement and gets skipped surprisingly often. Suggested: Victron SmartShunt 500A + Lynx Class-T Power In (M10) + Class-T fuse + Lynx Distributor + busbars SmartShunt 500A verified at $100.30, Lynx Class-T Power In M10 verified at $187.00 (8 in stock). Class-T fuse element (~$95), Lynx Distributor (~$210) and cable/lugs (~$120) are estimated — the fuse is NOT included with the Lynx Class-T holder. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Class-T is the only fusing with the interrupt rating to safely break a 600Ah lithium bank's short-circuit current, and the Lynx Class-T Power In puts the fuse and the main positive busbar in one marine-rated enclosure instead of a home-brew stud fuse on a shelf. |
Alternator — Balmar 621 series, 100A | $688 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | 100A 12V alternator to replace the standard unit. A stock alternator asked to bulk-charge lithium runs flat out until it cooks itself; this one is built for it. Suggested: Balmar 6-Series Light Duty Dual Foot Marine Alternator, 12V 100A Out of stock at Defender; notify-me available. Check pulley type (SV / DV / K6 / J10) against your Yanmar before ordering. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | 100A is the right size for a small-bore Yanmar's belt and bracket without a serpentine conversion, and Balmar is the one alternator brand where rectifiers, regulators and brackets are stocked by cruiser-facing dealers in NZ and Australia — which is the whole point at the far end of this trip. |
External regulator and DC-DC charger | $978 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Fisheries Supply price verified | Balmar MC-618 or Wakespeed external regulator with a lithium profile and alternator temperature sensing, plus a DC-DC charger so the start battery still gets looked after. Suggested: Wakespeed WS500 Pro Bluetooth alternator regulator + Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC charger WS500 Pro $649.99 (15 in stock at Fisheries), Orion XS 12/12-50 $328.10 (48 in stock at Fisheries). Alternator temp sensor is included in the WS500 wiring harness. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The WS500 is the only mainstream regulator that regulates on alternator temperature and current rather than just capping output, which is what keeps a 100A alternator alive when a 600Ah lithium bank will happily accept everything it makes; the Orion XS then keeps the start battery topped without exposing it to the lithium charge profile. |
Solar panels — 800W of rigid marine panels | $640 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Renogy price from a listing | Roughly 4 × 200W rigid panels. At 3.4 Wh per watt per day in the tropics this covers about 82% of a passage day, with the alternator making up the rest. Suggested: 4x Renogy 200W 12V rigid monocrystalline panel (800W total) $159.99 each; the N-Type 200W showed as 'Unavailable' on Renogy's own page at time of checking — confirm the current SKU. 10-year product / 25-year 80% output warranty. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | This is the honest value answer: rigid aluminium-framed panels on a stainless arch see far less flex and salt intrusion than deck-mounted flexibles, and at ~$0.80/W you can afford to carry a fifth panel as a spare for less than the cost of one marine-branded unit. |
MPPT controllers — 2 × Victron SmartSolar 100/50 | $270 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | NAZ Solar Electric (solar-electric.com) price verified | Two controllers rather than one, so shading on half the array does not drag down the other half — which on a boat, with a boom and a rig, it constantly does. Suggested: 2x Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 charge controller $135.15 each. Note: 100/30 is rated to ~440W at 12V, so 400W per controller is inside spec with headroom. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Your $700 placeholder is about 2.5x what this actually costs — two 100/30s give you redundancy, shade-independent tracking per array half, and VE.Smart networking to the shunt, and Victron parts are stocked in every cruising hub from Papeete to Brisbane. |
Electrical installation labour | $2,000 $0all boats$4k | 100% certain | P2 | Bay Area marine electrical contractor (Alameda / Sausalito / Richmond) price estimated | Marine electrician for the bank, charging, distribution and commissioning, at Bay Area yard rates. Suggested: Marine electrician labour: lithium bank, alternator/regulator, DC-DC, solar array and controllers, distribution and fusing 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | ESTIMATE. Bay Area ABYC-certified marine electricians bill roughly $145-185/hr in 2026; this scope is realistically 32-40 hours (battery box rework and tie-downs 6-8h, alternator/regulator/DC-DC 8-10h, solar run from arch to controllers 8-10h, distribution/fusing/shunt 6-8h, commissioning and documentation 4h). $160/hr x 35h = $5,600. Your $3,500 placeholder assumes ~22 hours, which is optimistic once cable routing through a 39ft monohull is priced honestly. |
Rail, pushpit and stanchion mounts plus tilt brackets for four rigid panels | $550 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | Multiple (Sunware / Scanstrut / Seaview rail mounts, or a local rigger) price estimated | ESTIMATE, and an ADDITION you did not ask for — delete this row if you are handling panel mounting outside the catalogue. With the arch removed the 800W still has to go somewhere: stainless rail clamps and adjustable tilt brackets run roughly $100-160 per panel, and a pair of panels can also go on the coachroof or across the pushpit. This is the cheap answer to the same problem the $6,000 arch was solving, and it keeps the weight low and off the transom where the Monitor lives. 2 alternatives considered

Heated, Bluetooth BMS, 200A continuous, 11-year warranty, 58lb each. Sized from the load list: 258Ah/day on passage, 1.5 days autonomy at 80% usable. Suggested: Epoch Essentials 12V 300Ah heated LiFePO4 with Bluetooth BMS — 2 units (600Ah) $1,599.00 each. Drop-ships from the manufacturer; ~90lb per battery so freight is significant but usually included at this price point. Confirm freight at checkout. 2 alternatives considered

Windvane self-steering | $5,495 $0all boats$10k | 100% certain | P1 | Scanmar International, Richmond CA price verified | Servo-pendulum or auxiliary-rudder vane gear on the transom. Steers with no electricity at all, which changes the whole power picture on a 20-day passage. California sales tax applies. Tiller-steered version is $4,795. 2 alternatives considered

Add the $250 cruising spares kit and the $1,295 E-Rudder emergency conversion and you're still under $7,100 with an emergency rudder included. |
Autopilot — Raymarine EV-200 Sail, linear drive | $4,200 $0all boats$8k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | EV-1 sensor core, ACU-200 with rotary rudder reference, p70s head, Type 1 short linear 12V drive, cabling. Autopilot installation | $2,240 $0all boats$5k | 100% certain | P2 | Bay Area marine electronics installer price estimated | Drive foundation and mounting, rudder reference fitting, wiring, commissioning and sea trial. Suggested: Below-deck autopilot installation: drive mounting/backing, ACU and EV-1 siting, rudder reference, SeaTalk ng integration, sea trial and calibration 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | ESTIMATE. Bay Area marine electronics install labour runs about $140-175/hr in 2026. Budget 14 hours: fabricating and glassing the drive foundation and tiller-arm fitting is 6-8h on its own, then ACU/EV-1 siting and cabling 4h, and a proper dockside plus sea-trial calibration 2-3h. $160/hr x 14h = $2,240. Add $300-600 if the quadrant needs a machined tiller arm from your steering manufacturer. |

No through-hull, no installation, stows in a locker. $4,898 list plus $489 freight and roughly 10% tariff. Suggested: Rainman Portable 12VDC Watermaker, 26-34 L/hr, 1x40in membrane, 400W CONFIRMED landed cost to the US: US$4,745 unit + US$421 air freight from Sydney + US$35 customs fee = US$5,201 before state sales tax. Suggested: 300ft ACCO/Peerless G43 (G4) 5/16in hot-dip galvanised ISO windlass chain + 30ft nylon snubber + swivel Chain $5.59/ft x 300ft = $1,677.00, in stock. Snubber (~$120) and swivel (~$150) estimated. 300ft is ~300lb — freight on chain is substantial, check whether pickup or a drum shipment is cheaper. Defender lists the same ACCO G43 5/16in but was out of stock. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Anchoring depths drive this. Desolation Sound and southeast Alaska routinely want 60-100ft under the keel plus scope and a stern-tie, which is why the coastal variant carries MORE chain than the Pacific boat, not less. |
Stern-tie reel and line | $600 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Not sourced price estimated | Deck-mounted reel with 300-600ft of floating polypropylene | $400–$900 | Standard practice in British Columbia and southeast Alaska, where anchorages are deep and steep-sided and everyone ties back to a tree. Unheard of in the Tuamotus. Inferred from chandlery pricing. |
Secondary anchor and rode | $918 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | El Capitan Marine (anchor) + Hamilton Marine (chain) price from a listing | Fortress FX-23 or similar aluminium kedge with 30ft of chain and 200ft of rode, stowed aft for a second anchor or to kedge off. Suggested: Fortress FX-23 (15 lb aluminium) + 30ft 5/16in G4 chain + 200ft 5/8in nylon three-strand rode FX-23 verified at $569.99 (28 in stock, free ground shipping). 30ft of 5/16in G4 at $5.59/ft = $167.70. 200ft of 5/8in nylon rode estimated ~$180. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Rated for 39-45ft boats with a 2,000lb working load at just 15lb, so one person can actually deploy it from the dinghy as a stern or storm hook, and it breaks down flat for locker stowage — which is the only reason a kedge ever gets carried rather than left ashore. |
Windlass sized for 5/16in chain | $2,359 $0all boats$5k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price from a listing | Vertical windlass with a gypsy matching 5/16in G4, its own breaker, foot switches and a backing plate. Hauling 300ft of chain by hand in a Tuamotu squall is not a plan. Suggested: Lewmar V2 Vertical Windlass Kit, 12V, with 5/16in G4 / 1/2in rope gypsy (V2G kit 002) Defender lists the V2 kit at $2,358.99-$2,651.64 depending on configuration. CRITICAL: specify the 002 gypsy (5/16in G4 chain / 1/2in rope) — the V700 at $869.99 that looks like the bargain here maxes out at 1/4in G4 and will not take your chain. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The V2 is the smallest Lewmar that takes a genuine 5/16in G4 gypsy, which is exactly the constraint you flagged; it's also the one whose gypsies, motors and solenoids are stocked across Australia and NZ, so a failed solenoid in Bundaberg is a same-week fix rather than a freight saga. |

Medical kit - coastal | $250 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P1 | Not sourced price estimated | Comprehensive first aid, trauma dressings, prescription course; no telemedicine retainer | $180–$400 | No sutures, no opioids, no offshore telemedicine subscription, because a hospital is hours away on this route rather than three weeks. Inferred. |
Liferaft - coastal, 6 person | $1,800 $0all boats$5k | 100% certain | P1 | Not sourced price estimated | Valise or canister coastal raft, 24-hour pack, no ballast bags or insulated floor | $1k–$2k | A coastal raft is a genuinely different product, not a cheaper offshore one: shorter pack, lighter canopy, no ballast bags. Adequate when rescue is hours away rather than days. Inferred from retail pricing. |
Offshore liferaft, 6 person, valise | $3,479 $0all boats$7k | 100% certain | P1 | Freeport Marine Supply price verified | VIKING RescYou, ISO 9650-1, Type E offshore pack, insulated double floor, four 60L ballast bags, SOLAS strobe. The thing you step up into when the boat is going down. Suggested: VIKING RescYou 6-Person Liferaft, Valise, Offshore (Type E) Pack Backordered, typically ships 2-4 weeks. Valise is ~85lb — oversize freight, budget $150-250. Add ~$400-600 for a pre-delivery service/repack in the Bay Area before departure. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | ISO 9650-1 certified, ISAF approved, third-party verified with the Type E offshore pack, insulated double floor and four 60L ballast bags — genuinely offshore, at roughly half the price of a Revere Offshore Elite that does the same job for this boat. |
EPIRB — ACR GlobalFix V5 Cat 1 | $1,055 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P1 | Defender Marine price verified | Float-free Category 1 EPIRB with GPS, AIS and Return Link Service. Mounted on deck in a hydrostatic bracket so it deploys itself if the boat sinks. Suggested: ACR GlobalFix V5 Cat I GPS AIS EPIRB (2851) 2 alternatives considered

Lifejackets with harness and AIS MOB, per crew | $1,528 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P1 | Defender Marine price verified | Inflatable 170N lifejacket with integral harness, spray hood, light and an AIS man-overboard beacon, for each of two crew. Suggested: 2x Spinlock Deckvest 6D 170N (integral harness, sprayhood, Pylon light) + 2x Ocean Signal rescueME MOB1 AIS/DSC beacon Deckvest 6D $379.00 ea (currently out of stock at Defender); MOB1 $384.95 ea (in stock). Budget ~$60/vest for rearm kits as spares. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The 6D is the offshore-standard vest with sprayhood, Pylon light and Lume-On bladder lights included, and the MOB1 auto-activates on inflation with both AIS and DSC — the DSC alarm on your own VHF is what actually turns the boat around when there are only two of you. |
Jacklines, tethers and cockpit hard points | $652 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P1 | West Marine price from a listing | Flat webbing jacklines bow to stern both side decks, two-clip elasticated tethers per crew, and padeyes in the cockpit so you can clip on before coming up. Suggested: 2x West Marine 50' polyester webbing jackline + 2x ORC-spec double safety tether + 4x bolt-through cockpit padeyes Jacklines $99.99 ea (out of stock), ORC double tethers $150.99 ea (out of stock). Padeyes ~$150 for the set, estimated — Wichard or Garhauer bolt-through, backing plates extra. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Flat webbing lies on deck and won't roll underfoot the way rope jacklines do, and the ORC double tether's 3ft/6ft legs let you stay clipped through a cockpit-to-mast transit — the padeye placement matters more than the hardware brand. |
Flares, danbuoy and recovery gear | $1,350 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P1 | Landfall Navigation / Defender Marine price estimated | In-date offshore flare pack, danbuoy with light, horseshoe buoy, floating throw line and a recovery sling — getting an unconscious adult back aboard is the part most crews have never practised. Suggested: ORC/ISAF Cat 0 & 1 SOLAS flare pack + Ocean Safety Jon Buoy inflatable danbuoy & horseshoe + Lifesling2 recovery sling + throw line Jon Buoy verified at $519.00 (white, out of stock at Defender). Flare pack (6 parachute, 4 handheld, 2 smoke), Lifesling2 and throw line are estimated at ~$500/$230/$100 — I could not load a live price for the Landfall ORC flare kit. Flares ship hazmat/ground only. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The Jon Buoy packs a full danbuoy and horseshoe into one rail canister that self-inflates with light and whistle, which is the only MOB marker a shorthanded crew will actually deploy in time; the SOLAS parachute flares are the part worth paying for since USCG-only flares are near-useless offshore. |
Offshore medical kit and telemedicine | $925 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P1 | West Marine (kit) + telemedicine provider TBD price estimated | Category A offshore kit — prescription antibiotics, sutures, splints, opioid analgesia — plus a year of remote medical support by satellite. Suggested: Marine Series 3000 offshore medical kit + 1 year remote telemedicine retainer Kit verified at $949.99 (out of stock). Telemedicine estimated at ~$800/yr — MedAire and GWU MFA Maritime Medical Access are the two mainstream options; neither publishes a retail price, you have to request a quote. Prescription contents (antibiotics, analgesics) need a physician's script and are not in the base kit price. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The Marine 3000 is explicitly built for 'more than 24 hours from professional care', up to 28 days and 14 people, which is the right envelope for a 3,000nm passage; the telemedicine retainer is what makes the kit usable, since the limiting factor offshore is diagnosis, not supplies. |

Emergency boarding ladder, deployable by a person already in the water | $400 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P1 | Defender Marine price estimated | ESTIMATE. Missing from the original list and from most boats. Two-handed, the realistic MOB scenario is that the person in the water gets back to the boat and then cannot get aboard — a swim ladder that only deploys from on deck is useless to them, and a Lifesling hoist needs the person on deck to be strong enough to winch a soaked adult. This closes the last metre of the recovery. ESTIMATE — the Wichard SP992 product page 404'd at time of checking. Ocean Safety and Plastimo both make equivalents in the $250-500 band. Personal locator beacons, two | $1,190 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P2 | Lambda Marine price verified | One PLB per watchkeeper, worn on the lifejacket. Ships in 24-72 hours. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The only PLB that carries both 406MHz satellite alerting and local AIS, so one device covers both 'the ship finds me' and 'the rescue coordination centre finds me' — worth the premium over an AIS-less PLB when you are two-handed and the boat is the nearest asset. |
Jordan series drogue with attachment points | $2,400 $0all boats$5k | 100% certain | P2 | Ace Sailmakers (Dave Pelissier), East Lyme CT price estimated | Drogue sized to displacement, plus the transom chainplates to take it. Your storm tactic for running off in survival conditions. Suggested: Jordan Series Drogue, ~110 cones on ~185ft line with 75ft leader, plus bridle PRICE NOT VERIFIED — Ace publishes no price list; you must email AceSailMakers@yahoo.com or call (860) 739-5999 for a quote. $2,400 is my estimate for the drogue and bridle. Stern chainplates are a separate fabrication job, budget $600-1,200 for a Bay Area yard including backing plates. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Ace is the builder Don Jordan himself worked with and the reference build for the design; at 17,000lb you interpolate between the published 15,000lb (107 cones / 254ft total) and 20,000lb (116 cones / 269ft) specs — the chainplates, not the drogue, are where the money and the engineering actually go. |

VHF, fixed and handheld | $583 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P1 | Defender Marine price verified | Fixed DSC set with a masthead antenna and a waterproof floating handheld as backup and for the dinghy. Suggested: Standard Horizon Explorer GX1800G fixed DSC VHF w/ GPS + Shakespeare 5215 masthead antenna + Standard Horizon HX210 floating handheld GX1800G $399.99 (out of stock at Defender), Shakespeare 5215 $67.99 (in stock), HX210 $114.99 (in stock). Add ~$70-100 for RG-8X coax and connectors for the masthead run. Note the older GX1400/GX1400G are now discontinued. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Internal GPS means DSC distress works even if the NMEA backbone is dead, the 5215 is the standard 3ft masthead whip that survives being whipped by halyards, and the HX210 genuinely floats and strobes rather than needing a flotation case like the cheaper HX40. |
Davis Standard Echomaster octahedral radar reflector | $130 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P1 | Landfall Navigation price from a listing | MANDATORY under WCC 2026 (300mm octahedral minimum, or 10 square metres RCS equivalent) and not on your original list, while the optional radar was. Hoisted in the rigging it costs nothing to run and works when the boat has no power at all, which is exactly the situation in which you most want a ship to see you. VERIFY THE MODEL. Davis makes two Echomasters and only one is the octahedral. Defender's 'Emergency Echomaster' (part 152, $130.99) is a circular-plate design that does NOT meet the 300mm octahedral spec. | fixed | Your $1,076 placeholder is about $420 short of the current 9in price. NMEA2000 backbone and installation | $1,150 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine (parts) + Bay Area installer (labour) price estimated | Backbone, drops, terminators and power tap, plus fitting the displays and running cable to the masthead. Suggested: Raymarine SeaTalk ng Starter Kit (T70134) plus additional backbone cable, spurs, T-pieces and installation Starter kit verified at $130.99 (in stock: powered 5-way, two terminators, 3m spur, power cable). Additional backbone/spur cable and T-pieces estimated at ~$220. Labour estimated at 5 hours x $160/hr = $800. 2 alternatives considered

The starter kit is the right foundation because it's a genuine NMEA 2000 backbone under a Raymarine connector, so the Garmin plotter, em-trak AIS and Raymarine pilot all talk without adapters; buy spare T-pieces and a spare terminator now — they're trivially cheap here and unobtainable in the islands. |
AIS transponder — em-trak B954 or Vesper Cortex | $1,305 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | Class B+ SOTDMA at 5W with its own GPS and an integrated VHF splitter. 5W against Class B 2W is the difference between a ship seeing you at 8 miles and at 3. Includes mounting hardware and 2m power/data cable. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Almost exactly your placeholder, and it's the right unit: 5W SOTDMA gets you seen by ships at the range that actually matters at night, the built-in splitter means one masthead antenna instead of a second whip, and WiFi feeds an iPad as a backup display if the plotter dies. |
Iridium GO! or InReach | $400 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price from a listing | Global satellite messaging and GRIB weather for the stretches where Starlink has no maritime coverage — which mid-Pacific is exactly where you are. Suggested: Garmin inReach Mini 2 Marine Bundle (010-02602-30) Defender's listing marks this bundle as discontinued — check the standalone inReach Mini 2 or the newer Messenger Plus if the bundle can't be sourced. Bundle includes marine mount, 12V power cable, flotation lanyard and spine adapter. Hardware only; Iridium airtime is a separate subscription. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Iridium is the only truly pole-to-pole network, and the inReach gives you two-way texting, SOS and GRIB-capable weather for a fraction of an Iridium GO's hardware and airtime cost — as a Starlink backup you want cheap, low-power and independent, not fast. |

MANDATORY under WCC 2026 as the backup to the masthead antenna. Wind, speed and depth instruments | $2,044 $0all boats$4k | 100% certain | P3 | Defender Marine price verified | Masthead wind unit, speed and depth transducers, mast cabling and two displays. Feeds the autopilot as well as the crew — apparent wind is what lets it steer to a windshift. Suggested: Raymarine i70 Sail Pack (T70586: masthead wind txd, ST900/P120 speed/temp, D800 depth, iTC-5, one i70s display) + second i70s display (E70327) Sail pack $1,478.99, second i70s display $564.99 (in stock). Masthead wind cable is included in the pack; budget a mast-climb or an unstepped mast for the wind transducer run. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The sail pack bundles the analogue transducers with the iTC-5 converter so everything lands on the SeaTalk ng/NMEA 2000 backbone as one system, and a second i70s at the nav station means you're not craning into the cockpit to read wind angle on a night watch. |
Radar — solid-state radome | $2,585 $0all boats$5k | 100% certain | P3 | Defender Marine price verified | Radome on the arch, integrated with the plotter. Suggested: Raymarine Quantum 2 Q24D Doppler CHIRP solid-state radome $2,584.99 - $2,859.99 depending on cable configuration; the lower figure is the base radome. 21.3in dome, 17W transmit / 7W standby. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Fog from Cape Mendocino to Sitka is the normal summer condition, not an exception, so radar earns its place coastally at least as much as it does dodging squalls in the ITCZ. |
Starlink Mini with marine mount | $429 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P4 | Starlink (direct) price from a listing | Dish, 12V supply and a mount. Draws 15–20W, about 25Ah/day at 16 hours — far less than expected, and less than the fridge. Suggested: Starlink Mini kit + marine/rail mount + 12V DC supply Hardware $249 (from aggregator reporting, not loaded off Starlink's own price block — verify at checkout). Marine/rail mount ~$120 and a 12V-to-Mini DC cable ~$60 are estimated. Service is the real cost: budget a Roam or maritime plan monthly, and check ocean coverage on the Milk Run route before you commit. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | The Mini draws 20-40W and runs straight off 12V without an inverter, which is the whole reason it beats a Standard dish on a sailboat; at $249 hardware it's cheap enough to carry as a convenience rather than a life-safety item — which is exactly the right way to treat it offshore. |

Learn it before you go; a sextant you have never used is ballast. Sextant verified at $558.99 (in stock, ships same day). Simple Sunbrella or shade-cloth awning for use at anchor, with lashing points | $400 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | Bay Area canvas shop, or a ready-made sun sail price estimated | ESTIMATE, and the one piece of the cancelled canvas package worth keeping as a line. A year in the tropics without shade at anchor is genuinely debilitating — cabin temperatures, sleep quality and how long you can bear to stay aboard all turn on it. This is the $400 version of the $8,500 package: a boom-supported awning or a shade sail lashed between the mast and the forestay, not a fitted bimini. 2 alternatives considered

Dinghy — 3.1m hypalon RIB | $3,600 $0all boats$7k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | Aluminium-hulled hypalon RIB. Hypalon, not PVC: PVC does not survive a year of tropical UV. This is the family car for a year. Suggested: Highfield Classic CL-310 aluminium-hull RIB, 10ft 2in (3.1m), ORCA Hypalon tubes Defender lists $5,199-$8,626 across configurations; out of stock at time of checking. IMPORTANT: white/light-grey tubes are ORCA Hypalon, dark grey/black are welded PVC — you must pick a light tube colour to get Hypalon. Boat freight is significant, $400-800 depending on destination; Bay Area pickup from a Highfield dealer is usually cheaper. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | Aluminium hull with ORCA Hypalon is the combination that survives a year of UV and coral beaching, and it's ~30lb lighter than a fibreglass RIB of the same size, which is what makes foredeck stowage and halyard hoisting realistic shorthanded. Your $4,200 placeholder buys a PVC boat, which will not last the trip. |
Outboard — 9.9–15hp four-stroke | $1,300 $0all boats$3k | 100% certain | P2 | Defender Marine price verified | Enough to get the RIB on the plane loaded, which matters when the anchorage is a mile across and the trades are blowing 25. Suggested: Tohatsu MFS9.9 four-stroke EFI tiller outboard, 15in shaft Defender lists $2,512-$3,273 across shaft lengths (15in/20in/25in); out of stock at time of checking. Includes a 12L external tank, fittings and fuel line. 5-year warranty. 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | 94.7lb makes it one of the lightest 9.9s made, which matters every time you hang it on the pushpit rail; battery-less EFI means no carburettor to gum up on stale island fuel, and Tohatsu builds the Mercury and Nissan small four-strokes too, so parts turn up under three brand names across the Pacific. |
Dinghy stowage — foredeck chocks and lifting tackle | $900 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P2 | Bay Area rigger / Garhauer tackle price estimated | Chocks and a halyard lifting arrangement for passages. Suggested: Custom foredeck chocks + 4:1 halyard lifting tackle + tie-down straps and padeyes 2 alternatives considered
| fixed | ESTIMATE, no single product page. Budget roughly: Garhauer 4:1 lifting tackle with becket and cam ~$300, custom starboard or teak chocks shaped to the hull ~$350-450 (or ~$150 in materials if you make them), padeyes, backing plates and ratchet straps ~$150. The chocks are the part worth doing properly — a RIB that shifts in a seaway will destroy a foredeck. |
2x mask, fins and snorkel, dive knife, weight belt and a float line | $280 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | Local dive shop or West Marine price estimated | ESTIMATE. Missing from the original list and treated as recreation when it is actually ship's equipment. In the Pacific you will need to go over the side to clear a fouled prop, check that the anchor is set in coral rather than draped over it, and inspect the rudder and through-hulls after a grounding. Getting a line off the prop with a mask on takes ten minutes; without one it can take the boat. 2 alternatives considered

Crab and prawn gear | $350 $0all boats$2k | 100% certain | P4 | Not sourced price estimated | Two traps, line, floats and a puller | $200–$600 | Optional, and here so the coastal list is recognisably a coastal list rather than the offshore one with items deleted. Inferred. |

Diesel cabin heater | $3,500 $0all boats$9k | 100% certain | P1 | Not sourced price estimated | Webasto Air Top 2000 or Dickinson bulkhead heater, ducted, with tank pickup and flue | $3k–$5k | Non-negotiable north of Cape Mendocino and the single biggest difference between a boat that can go north and one that turns back. No offshore analogue: nobody heats a cabin in the trades. Inferred from typical Bay Area install quotes; needs a real one. |
Lee cloths for two sea berths, with through-bolted padeyes and backing plates | $350 $0all boats$1k | 100% certain | P2 | Bay Area canvas shop or DIY price estimated | ESTIMATE. Missing from the original list and cheap enough that leaving it off is inexplicable — with two of you standing watches for three weeks, the ability to sleep hard on a heeled boat is a safety system, not a comfort. Sleep-deprived crew make the decisions that sink boats. Acrylic canvas, webbing straps to eyebolts in the deckhead, and padeyes bolted through the berth flat, not screwed. 2 alternatives considered
