Capability is scored for both standards from the same design research, re-weighted. The money is not: a coastal refit has to be costed on its own, which is why it can read “not analysed” above while the score beside it is real.
The paper trail. Research finds references; you supply the documents behind them. Analysing a file revises the boat and records what changed, so the evidence and its effect stay together.

- Beneteau 393 — Used Boat ReviewreviewPractical SailorThe single most useful document found for this hull. Source for the balsa-cored deck, the hull-deck joint construction (bolted only at chocks, stanchions and cleats, machine screws on 6in centres elsewhere), the fibreglass structural grid and taped bulkheads, the cast iron keel bedded on sealant with machined-in bolts, the deck-stepped mast needing a babystay to stay in column, the furling-versus-classic mainsail options, and the offshore verdict. Note one internal inconsistency I could not resolve: the specification table gives the engine as a 40hp Volvo while the body text at one point says a 40hp Westerbeke. Both appear in the review.
- Beneteau Oceanis 393: the groundbreaking designreviewPractical Boat OwnerSource for the two keel options as built — deep 1.90m draft with 2,111kg ballast, shoal 1.55m with 2,439kg — for the statement that the shoal boats carried an extra 328kg of low-slung ballast to preserve righting moment, for LOA 11.98m/39ft 3in against a hull length of 11.62m, for the traveller position forward of the sprayhood, and for the history that this third-generation Oceanis was drawn specifically to fix the ultimate-stability failings of the earlier 390-generation boats after an MAIB inversion finding. Also the source for the current European market band of GBP 70,000-90,000.
- BENETEAU 393 — sailboat specificationsmanufacturer specSailboatdataSource for hull length 38.16ft, LWL 35.08ft, beam 13.00ft, displacement 17,152 lb, standard draft 5.08ft and deep draft 6.25ft, water 119 gal, fuel 36 gal, rig dimensions I 46.08 / J 14.50 / P 40.33 / E 15.08, masthead sloop, Berret/Racoupeau design, and — importantly for provenance — the note that the model was also marketed as the OCEANIS 393 and the MOORINGS 403.
- Beneteau 393otherWikipedia[encyclopaedia] Tertiary source used as corroboration only. Independently gives production 2002-2007 with about 600 boats built in France and in Marion, South Carolina; solid fibreglass hull with balsa-cored deck; 5,357 lb of cast iron ballast; standard fin keel with weighted bulb at 5.08ft and optional deep keel at 6.25ft; internally-mounted spade rudder; deck-stepped masthead rig with two sets of swept spreaders; 40hp Volvo diesel; and the evolution into the Cyclades 39.3 for the charter market. The US build location matters here — it is one reason the engine could be a Westerbeke or a Yanmar rather than the European Volvo.
- Beneteau Oceanis 393 — sail datamanufacturer specGood Old BoatUsed for LOA 39.33ft, sail areas by configuration (main 312.69 sq ft, 135 percent genoa 437.41, 150 percent genoa 499.03, asymmetric 899, storm jib 108.12) and the two draft options. CAUTION: gives ballast as 5,952 lb where Wikipedia gives 5,357 lb and PBO gives 2,111kg (4,654 lb) for the deep keel and 2,439kg (5,377 lb) for the shoal. Three sources, three numbers. I have not adjudicated; the ballast ratio is somewhere between 27 and 35 percent and the exact figure depends on which keel this hull has.
- Beneteau Sailboat Cutlass Bearing ChartotherMurray Yacht Sales[parts reference] Materially good news, and the best evidence I found on drive type. The chart lists "Oceanis 381, 393, 400, 411, 423" against a 30mm cutlass bearing, which means a conventional propeller shaft in a strut or log — not a saildrive. That removes the saildrive diaphragm as a scheduled five-year consumable and as a below-waterline failure path, which is a real advantage over many French production boats of this era. Confirm by eye at the survey haulout.
- Comments (Good and Bad) on Beneteau 393class associationSailboat Owners ForumsOwner evidence rather than a manufacturer document, and thin, but three things came out of it. First, an optional 56hp Yanmar existed alongside the standard 40hp engine and owners who took it are glad they did. Second, the 36-gallon fuel tank is called out by an owner as a drawback he plans to answer with jerry cans. Third, an owner reports having to reef the main earlier than on other boats he has owned or the boat becomes overpowered quickly — relevant to a squally trade-wind passage — while a classic-rig owner reports the boat is fast and easy to sail. Also one report of poor factory quality control on interior assembly.
- The corrosion mechanism of grey cast-iron yacht keel in marine environment during long-term exposureotherUniversity of Portsmouth Research Portalmay not fit this hull[academic paper] Applies to cast iron keels generally, not to this hull specifically. Included because this boat has a cast iron keel and has sat largely unused for a decade, and the paper's central finding is exactly that combination: the lack of full maintenance over a long period is identified as the main factor in rapid galvanic corrosion and premature keel failure, with inadequate paint protection and seawater contaminants compounding it. It is the reason the keel line below is a cost item rather than only a risk.
- Berkeley Marine Center — Yard RatesotherBerkeley Marine Center[yard rate sheet] The most relevant yard in the file: the boat is in Berkeley Marina and this yard is in the same basin, so haulout involves no delivery at all. No effective date is published, which is a caveat. General technician $125/hr, skilled technician $140/hr, haul and launch $19/ft for 40ft and longer and $17/ft for 30-39ft, DIY lay days $2.50/ft/day rising $0.50/ft every two weeks, crane $300/hr with a half-hour minimum, travelift $300/hr, mast lay day $25. Used as the low end of the Bay Area labour band, and the publication of DIY lay-day rates is direct evidence the yard permits owner work.
- KKMI Sausalito — Menu of ServicesotherKKMI[yard rate sheet] Effective 11/10/2023, so nearly three years stale as of August 2026 — treat as a floor, not a ceiling. General bottom prep $145/hr, finish painting $159/hr, skilled craftsperson $169/hr, sanitary systems $179/hr, crane and travelift $380/hr, haul and launch $16/ft for 20-39ft, yard storage $4.00/ft/day, plus a 4.75 percent safety fee on all labour and goods. Used as the high end of the Bay Area labour band throughout this file.
- Survey Prices — Steve Jones Marine SurveyorotherSteveSurveys, Fairfax CA[surveyor rate sheet] Directly applicable, and worth noting as a cost advantage of a Bay Area boat: pre-purchase survey for boats under 50ft at $27 per foot with a $550 minimum, which is $1,060 at 39.25ft, and explicitly no travel fees for boats in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Alameda Counties. Berkeley is in Alameda County, so the $0.80 per mile that would have applied to an out-of-area boat is zero here.
- Survey Rates — Maritime SurveyorsotherMaritime Surveyors[surveyor rate sheet] Used only to set the upper end of the survey band: a pre-purchase condition and valuation survey quoted at $28.00-$35.00 per foot, which is $1,099-$1,374 at 39.25ft.
- Tahiti Cruisers Guide — Marine suppliesotherThe Floating Lab / Tahiti Cruisers Guide[cruising guide] What can and cannot be obtained in Papeete, which is the only meaningful repair infrastructure on the route. Nautisport is named as the official Volvo distributor and Sin Tung Hing Marine as the Yanmar dealer and the official Lowrance, Simrad and Raymarine distributor. Tahiti Yacht Accessoire holds the best stock of line, webbing and chain plus West System epoxy. The cautions are that chain ordered through Sin Tung Hing takes a few months to arrive, and that one cruiser reports Nautisport being unable to find a Volvo part he needed. Directly relevant here because the engine on this boat is most likely a Volvo and possibly a Westerbeke — and Westerbeke appears nowhere in this guide at all.
- Berkeley, California sales and use tax rate 2026otherAvalara[tax reference] Basis for the useTaxPctOverride of 10.25. A commercial rate lookup rather than a CDTFA document — I checked CDTFA-105 (rev. 40, 4-26) and it lists Alameda County district taxes but has no separate Berkeley line, so I could not confirm the combined figure from the primary source. California use tax on a private-party vessel purchase is assessed on where the vessel is principally berthed and registered, so this figure only holds if the boat stays in Berkeley Marina through the refit. Verify with CDTFA before relying on it.
