Capability is scored for both standards from the same design research, re-weighted. The money is not: a coastal refit has to be costed on its own, which is why it can read “not analysed” above while the score beside it is real.
$390k of uncertainty sits behind 28 unanswered questions.
Answer from the top: these are ordered by how much each one would narrow the range, not by how they occurred to anyone.
If the boat is sold in Australia at the end of the voyage, what is the expected import duty and GST liability, and would selling in New Zealand, Fiji or back in the US net more?
The Australian Border Force applies 'a general rate of duty of 5 per cent' plus '10 per cent goods and services tax' when a foreign yacht is imported for sale. On a boat of this value that is a mid-five-figure sum coming straight off the proceeds — much larger than on the $139,000 monohulls, and large enough to change the answer. The offset is that a Seawind is an Australian brand and sells far better there than an American production monohull would.
worth $50kask brokerHull and laminateWhy is the boat being sold in 2026 after roughly $40,000 of refit work in March and May 2024, with only 16.1 hours on the new generator? How long has she been on the market, has the price moved, and have any prior offers fallen through after survey?
Somebody bought new sails in 2022, re-rigged in 2024, fitted a $23,688 generator in May 2024 — and then barely used the boat. Either their plans changed, or something was discovered. If a prior survey exists it is the most valuable document in the transaction.
worth $30kask brokerHull and laminateWhat is the hull identification number, and is there any record of a prior survey, grounding, insurance claim or repair in seventeen years? How much of the boat's life was spent sailing in San Francisco Bay?
The HIN pins the build year and hull number. The Bay question is not idle: seventeen years of short steep Bay chop hitting a 0.71m bridgedeck is a harsher fatigue environment than a warm-water charter life, and it is the only reason bridgedeck fatigue is on the risk list at all.
worth $30kask brokerHull and laminateDoes the March 2024 'saildrive service and paint' invoice for $1,857 include replacing the rubber diaphragms on both SD20 legs, or was it anodes, oil and antifouling? If the diaphragms were not done, when were they last changed?
Yanmar's stated interval is five years and these legs are seventeen. That diaphragm is the only thing between the ocean and the inside of each hull, there are two of them, and $929 a leg does not buy the engine-out access the job needs.
worth $27kask ownerShaft, coupling, prop, stern glandWhat service history exists for both Yanmar 3YM30s? Specifically: when were the exhaust mixing elbows last removed and inspected, when were the heat exchangers last opened, and are the hours matched between the two engines?
The 3YM30 is a good simple engine and 1,641 hours is unremarkable — but elbows carbon up on a calendar rather than a tachometer, and a sister-ship thread records one blocked solid at 200 hours over four years. There are two engines, so every failure probability doubles.
worth $26kask ownerEngineWill you permit a full moisture-meter and thermal survey of the foam-cored deck on a dry morning, with specific attention to the targa arch feet, the trampoline anchorages on the forward beam and hull sides, and the March 2024 solar mounts — inspected from below as well as above?
The targa arch carries the entire mainsheet load into a cored deck through its feet, the trampoline anchorages are cyclically loaded by every wave, and the solar mounts are the newest holes in the oldest deck. Foam behaves better than balsa when wet, which is why this is a moderate rather than a large risk — but it is the largest remaining structural unknown.
worth $24kask surveyorDeck, hardware and hull–deck jointWhat is the house battery bank — make, chemistry, capacity in amp-hours, number of batteries, where they are located and what date is on the cases? Please send a photograph of the battery compartment.
The listing itemises a $1,297 torsion cable and a $1,376 hatch with invoice numbers and never once mentions the batteries. On a document this careful that silence is an answer. A fridge, a freezer, a 300 GPD watermaker and an autopilot with no windvane backup all depend on a bank nobody has described.
worth $20kask brokerBattery bankHave the four rudder bearings ever been inspected or replaced? Is there any play, thunking or vibration when motoring or turning hard? Can both rudders be swung with play measured at the top and bottom of each tube at the survey haulout?
This is the model's best-documented weakness — bronze collars epoxy-bonded into fibreglass tubes, and on the 2008 sister ship the bond degraded and all four had to be cut out. Twin rudders are one of this boat's real offshore advantages over a monohull, and that only holds if both are sound.
worth $16kask surveyorRudder and bearingsWhat Raymarine autopilot is fitted — course computer model, control head, and above all what DRIVE UNIT is on the steering linkage? What year was it installed? Please photograph the drive.
There is no windvane on this boat and there cannot practically be one, so the electric pilot IS the self-steering with no mechanical fallback. An undated 'Raymarine autopilot' on a 2009 boat could be a wheel pilot that will hold a course in the Bay and give up in a following Pacific swell. This is the highest-impact single component question in the file.
worth $14kask brokerAutopilot and self-steeringWhat does Seawind give as this model's design displacement and maximum loaded displacement, and what is the payload allowance in kilograms?
Practical Sailor is blunt that 'Seawind will suffer materially from overloading' and owners report she 'feels a bit heavy and less responsive' when loaded for remote cruising. The entire generic gear catalogue — 600Ah of lithium, chain, a liferaft, spares — has to fit inside that number, on top of a generator the boat was not designed around. This is the question that decides whether the catalogue itself needs rewriting for this hull.
worth $14kask class associationHull and laminateWhy was the Gebo deck hatch replaced in March 2024 — a leak, a crack, or a broken hinge? Do any of the other nine hatches leak, and can you photograph each one from inside looking up?
One hatch out of ten already reached the point of replacement rather than re-bedding, and the other nine are the same age with the same UV history. Why that one failed tells you what to expect from the rest. Crazing shows worst from inside looking up and cannot be polished out.
worth $14kask brokerWindows, hatches and portsWhat is the maximum beam measured with a tape at the widest point including rubrails and any transom or davit overhang — 20ft 4in or 21ft 4in?
Sources disagree by a foot and a foot decides where this boat can be lifted. Berkeley's travelift takes 15ft, KKMI Point Richmond 20ft 6in, KKMI Sausalito 20ft. At 21ft 4in the whole refit runs from Napa Valley Marina's rail at $50/ft, thirty miles up the river; at 20ft 4in KKMI Richmond opens up. It repeats at every haulout for the rest of the boat's life.
worth $14kask surveyorKeel and keel boltsWho did the March 2024 re-rig for $8,999, and can I have the invoice? Did it include the diamond stays as well as the shrouds, was the mast unstepped, and were the chainplates and the mast beam step inspected at the same time?
The re-rig is this boat's single most valuable feature and the sister-ship record shows exactly why it was needed — swage cracks at ten years. $8,999 against $2,939 of materials on a sister ship should have bought a lot of labour and a mast climb, and the invoice is the only way to know what it actually covered.
worth $12kask riggerStanding riggingIs the centre steering bracket the original single Ronstan traveller car, or has it been changed to Seawind's later horizontal mount or otherwise modified? Please photograph it.
Seawind redesigned this component 'to reduce stress on the ball bearings' and at least two 2008-hull owners are on record with problems. A builder does not re-engineer a steering component for fun. This is the system that runs continuously for three weeks downwind, and a photograph settles it.
worth $11kask ownerSteering gearIs there a liferaft, an EPIRB, any flares, any fire extinguishers, jacklines or lifejackets aboard, and are they included in the sale? If a liferaft is aboard, what make, capacity, manufacture date and last service date — please photograph the sticker.
Not one item of abandon-ship or stay-aboard safety equipment appears anywhere in the listing, on a boat with a three-burner LPG range, an LPG grill, a diesel generator and two engine compartments. If a liferaft is aboard and serviceable it zeroes a catalogue line; if it is aboard and twenty years old it is worse than nothing, because somebody will trust it.
worth $10kask brokerSafety equipmentWhich Bay Area yard would actually take this boat for a fifteen-month refit, and has anyone confirmed the beam with them in writing? Is Napa Valley Marina the only option, and what is the realistic wait for a rail booking?
The refit plan for every other candidate in this file assumes Berkeley or KKMI. Neither can lift this boat at the published beam. Depending on a single facility thirty miles up the Napa River for a fifteen-month refit is a schedule risk as much as a cost, and it needs confirming before an offer, not after.
worth $10kask yardHull and laminateWhat model is the Garmin MFD and what year was it fitted? Is the radar a magnetron radome or solid-state? What make and class is the AIS — Class B or Class B+? And does the AIS target list actually appear on the Garmin screen?
Five brands and at least three generations with nothing said about how they connect. That last question is the cheap one that settles whether this is a network or three islands — and it decides whether the catalogue's nmea-backbone line can ever be zeroed. Radar type changes power draw materially on a boat with an undocumented battery bank.
worth $9kask brokerElectronics and navigationIs the generator a Fischer Panda 5000 (5kW) or a 7.5kW unit? The listing says both. What are the actual hours, and can it be run under real load for an hour at the sea trial?
A $23,688 line item described two different ways deserves resolving. More substantively, 16.1 hours in two years means the machine has been sitting, and marine diesel generators die of sitting rather than of running. It is also the largest single piece of weight aboard that this boat may not need.
worth $7kask ownerElectrical, AC and DCHow are the two fuel tanks plumbed — can either engine draw from either tank, where does the generator take its fuel from, and are there inspection ports or any fuel polishing? How are the tanks chocked?
Two tanks, two engines in two hulls and a generator is an architecture no monohull in this file has, and whether one engine can run off the other hull's tank is a passage-planning question, not a detail. Aluminium tanks fail from water trapped against them by their own chocking, and nobody has described the chocking.
worth $7kask surveyorFuel tanks and systemHow many solar panels were fitted in March 2024, what make and model, and what is the total sticker wattage? Where are they mounted, and is the Victron controller a single unit or more than one?
This is a capacity line in the generic catalogue and there is no quantity anywhere, so it cannot be zeroed or costed until it is answered — I have left it deliberately unresolved rather than guess. The $2,564 invoice is consistent with anything from about 400W to 800W. On a boat with no documented battery bank, the solar number is half the energy plan.
worth $6kask ownerElectrical, AC and DCIs the Achilles RIB hypalon or PVC, and what shaft length is the Honda? How is the tender currently carried — davits, chocks, or on deck — and are davits included?
The tender is the closest match to the catalogue of anything aboard and it turns on one word. Hypalon survives a tropical year and PVC does not. Stowage is the open gap: no davits, chocks or lifting tackle appear anywhere, and a 10ft RIB has to live somewhere on a boat with no foredeck to speak of.
worth $6kask brokerDinghy and outboardHow old is the Isotherm refrigeration and the freezer, and what does each hold at anchor in summer? Where would two people actually sleep on a three-week passage?
Neither cold box is dated and together they are the largest continuous DC draw aboard, which matters enormously given the undocumented battery bank. The berth question is the honest one: three cabins in two hulls means the off-watch crew is down a hull and out of earshot, so the real sea berths are the saloon settees and the catalogue's lee-cloth line needs respecifying for them.
worth $5kask ownerInterior and sea berthsDoes the 2022 Hood mainsail have a third reef, and does it carry offshore chafe reinforcement at the spreaders and diamond stays? Is there any storm sail or trysail aboard?
On a catamaran, reefing early and deeply is the primary means of not being over-canvassed, because the boat does not heel to warn you. Hood built this sail in 2022 for an owner who was not, as far as anything shows, planning an ocean crossing. Also note the catalogue's ATN Gale Sail is specified for monohulls over a furled headsail and may not suit a small self-tacking jib on a Profurl.
worth $5kask ownerSailsAre the propellers two-blade fixed bronze, two-blade folding, or the factory Gori three-blade folding? The listing, the model reference and the boat review each say something different.
Fixed two-blade bronze on a 7-tonne catamaran is roughly half a knot of boat speed, every hour, for 6,000 miles — and on a boat whose whole case rests on passage speed, that is not a detail. It also changes the motoring numbers and the amount of drag on the saildrive legs.
worth $5kask brokerShaft, coupling, prop, stern glandHow old is the Spectra Catalina 300, when were the membranes last changed, and has it been pickled or run regularly? What bilge pumps are fitted in each hull — electric and manual?
The Spectra is not in the 2022-24 refit block, so it predates it and the membranes are a dated consumable with a shelf life. The bilge pump question is the catamaran one: the catalogue assumes one bilge and this boat has two that do not connect, so each hull needs its own electric and its own manual pump reachable from inside that hull.
worth $5kask ownerPlumbing, water tanks and headsHow old is the trampoline, has it ever been replaced, and what condition are the lacing, the bolt-rope track and the beam attachment points in?
The trampoline is not canvas trim on a catamaran, it is the foredeck and it is what stops a person going through to the water between the hulls at night. It is not mentioned anywhere in a listing that dated a $1,376 hatch, so it is almost certainly the 2009 original — seventeen years of UV on mesh that fails at the seams, invisibly, until it does not.
worth $5kask ownerCanvas, dodger and coversHow old is the 50m of 8mm chain and has it been re-galvanised? Is there a second anchor and rode, and is there an anchor BRIDLE rather than a snubber? What is the exact gypsy specification on the Muir HR1200?
50m is 136ft short of the catalogue's 300ft, on a high-windage boat that will anchor in 20-25m over coral in the Tuamotus. And the chain is metric 8mm short-link, which cannot simply be extended with US 5/16in G4 — so the answer decides whether you buy a new gypsy or a full metric rode. Chain ordered in French Polynesia takes months.
worth $5kask ownerGround tackle and windlassWhat material are the lifelines — bare 1x19 stainless or vinyl-coated — and what terminals are fitted? Have the stanchion bases ever been re-bedded?
'High-quality' is a broker's adjective, not a specification, and the wire is seventeen years old. If it is coated it is not repairable at any price, because coating traps salt against the wire and offshore special regulations exclude it. A catamaran has a longer guardrail run and more stanchion bases penetrating a cored deck than a monohull of the same length.
